Radio Frequency Identification based Manufacturing and Distribution: An Exploratory Overview
نویسندگان
چکیده
Radio Frequency Identification is an automatic identification and data capture technology with huge potential in manufacturing and distribution. RFID’s broader applications in manufacturing operations include material handling, asset tracking, inventory visibility, information management, quality control and labor scheduling. Although this technology has been in use for the last twelve to thirteen years, however in recent times, the benefits of RFID has been realized and organizations throughout the world have started thinking and investing in this technology. Market analysis has also predicted that the market for RFID applications is likely to exceed $6 billion worldwide by 2010. This paper presents an exploratory overview of this astounding technology. RFID is being called as the next generation of the bar code technology. However RFID is much more advanced than it’s predecessor and this paper focuses on the salient characteristics that separate RFID from bar code technology, how it works, what are the current standard and compliances used in the manufacturing scenario. It deals with the basic RFID architecture particularly the tag architecture and its allied physics, also focusing on readers and the middleware and its allied components that make up the RFID system. This paper has strived to examine how RFID assist in various manufacturing and supply chain operations like warehouse management, asset management, item level tracking, labor scheduling, quality control and inventory visibility. Although RFID is seen as an avatar in the manufacturing scenario, however its implementation faces some tough challenges. This paper proposes an RFID implementation framework and deals with these challenges and also focuses on the possible solutions for these challenges, which are being implemented by various organizations.
